One for the Weekend
Visit Big Pit and take the underground tour with real miners and/or view the exhibits and audio- visual displays above ground and then take a journey on the Heritage Railway.

Take a fifteen minute walk along the leisure/cycle route, signed ‘Trains’ to Blaenavon’s Heritage Railway (alternatively take the car and follow the road signs)

Board the train on its short journey to the Whistle Inn. This railway, once part of the London & North Western Railway, was one of two main lines that served Blaenavon. Disembark at the Whistle Inn, which boasts an impressive collection of miners’ lamps. Have lunch or refreshments before your return rail journey.

On the railway journey pass the picturesque Garn Lakes, created in an area once covered by coal spoil tips and reclaimed during the 1980s.

Garn Lakes can be accessed either off the road to the Whistle Inn or the approach road to Furnace Sidings from the Brynmawr Road (B4248). The lakeside is now a local nature reserve, providing a peaceful haven for the visitor.
