Blaenavon is holding a series of free guided walks every weekend until 28 March, starting at 10:30am at the World Heritage Centre. See the timetable below for more details:
Saturday 27 February – Ivor Beynon, The Coity Tip Trail
A moderate walk through the landscape that inspired the writers Alexander Cordell, Douglas Adams, Dylan Thomas and Richard Llewellyn. Includes attractions that have spellbound world famous actors Richard Burton and Stanley Baker. Come and be inspired - meet at Blaenavon's World Heritage Centre, and then driving to Big Pit car park to visit Coity Tip. The walk will be passing Blaenavon Heritage Railway.
Saturday 6th March – Rob Short, Blaenavon Historical Landscape
A two hour walk from the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre visiting the landscape of the heritage site discussing the Ironmasters, living and working conditions, geology and the Cordell literary connections with Blaenavon taking in part of the Iron Mountain Trail. Moderate walk, please bring walking boots and waterproofs.
Saturday 13th March – Tony Thomas, The Ups and Downs of a Valleys Town
The walk will give you an opportunity to get to know this gem of a valleys town set in a World Heritage area where iron once was king. During the walk you will have an opportunity to visit the ironworks, with its wonderful workers’ cottages, which formed the background to the BBC’s acclaimed Coal House series. Blaenavon boasts all the traditional features of a valleys town… Chapels, Churches, a Workers’ Institute and of course a wide variety of pubs! Come and explore this wonderful hillside town ...but be prepared for all it ups and downs!
