War Memorial Imroved
The War Memorial Clock outside Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall has recently been improved thanks to a major programme of renovation that is benefitting each of Torfaen’s main war memorials. The work was carried out by specialist contractors at a cost of around £30,000 across the borough.
The Blaenavon Clock Tower was built in 1931 as a tribute to Blaenavon’s war dead and contains the names of hundreds of Blaenavon men killed in conflict between 1914 and 1979. However, in recent years the memorial has looked slightly worse for wear. Extensive cleaning work has now taken place on the main monument, the steps and the paved areas. Repairs have been made to the masonry and the stone inscription has been improved. The bronze plaques, bearing the names of Blaenavon’s war heroes, have also been professionally cleaned.
Councillor Bob Wellington, leader of Torfaen Council, said: "We are very proud of our military heritage in Torfaen and these timely works will ensure the memorials we have across the borough are of a standard that reflects the huge debt of gratitude we owe to those that have served our country."
