Brecon Beacons National Park

More than 40% of Blaenavon World Heritage Site falls within the Brecon Beacons National Park which contains some of the most spectacular and distinctive upland formations in southern Britain. It is a place steeped in history and surrounded by magnificent landscapes with many things to see and do. For the adventurous there are spectacular mountains, lakes, rivers and caves which can all be explored or quite relaxation and family activities can be found in the towns and villages around the area.

Stretching from Hay on Wye in the east to Llandeilo in the west, the Brecon Beacons Nationa Park incorporates the Black Mountains, the Central Beacons and Fforest Fawr as well as moorland, forests, valleys, waterfalls, lakes, caves and gorges. The park is spread over 500 square miles with plenty to do. Quiet country lanes, gentle footpaths, welcoming pubs, easy cycle rides, walks along the canal and tranquil scenery which are all easily accessible. There are also plenty of attractions to see and places to go.

The National Park is the perfect place to go walking whether you want a gentle ramble through fields and woods or the challenge of the high mountains, there is no shortage of options. You can stroll through steep valleys, wander along tranquil lakes or just amble along the canal.

Cycling is also a popular pursuit with the choice of energetic mountain biking or a gentle cycle ride. All bikes can be hired once you arrive.

Horse riding is also available with 15 riding and trekking centres in the park. Experienced guides can take you through the varied terrain on a day, half day or hour rides and many offer riding lessons.

There are many water activities from a gentle canal boat ride to canoeing and yachting.

The National Park is a haven for all sorts of wildlife which can be viewed at a number of areas around the site.  There is also evidence of the previous inhabitants of the area from Stone Age monoliths, Bronze Age burial mounds and Iron Age hill-forts. There is also evidence of Roman history, medieval and Georgian and there are many museums and visitor centres which give greater insight into previous periods of history.
