National Cycle Route
The Newport to Blaenavon cycle route forms part of the National Cycle Network which in the south of Torfaen follows the Monmouth and Brecon canal towpath and in the north runs along the former London and North Western Railway Line. Near Blaenavon, the route runs along the side of the Coity Mountain providing memorable views of the Avon Valley. A number of attractions may be visited on the journey such as Pontypool Inheritance Museum and Big Pit National Mining Museum of Wales at Blaenavon.
The route offers a glimpse into the turbulent history of the Monmouthshire Brecon Canal which was closed in the mid-20th century but has now been given a new lease of life. You will cycle alongside restored sections as well as derelict lengths, and the southern section of the main line is popular with narrow boats as part of the popular Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal.
After leaving the canal, you then follow a cycle path on the track bed of an old railway up to Blaenavon. Although the track climbs up the valleys, the gradient is gradual making this ride suitable for all types of cyclists from the leisurely to the experienced cyclists. The route is also well surfaced making it suitable for all types of cycles.
The route is approximately 24km/15miles long and takes roughly 3 hours each way. The route is signposted as part of the National Cycle Network and there are clear blue signs at every turn.
