St Peters Church
The parish Church of St Peter in the Diocese of Monmouth was built by the local ironmasters Samuel Hopkins and Thomas Hill in 1804 and donated to the parish. The church is one of the earliest buildings in the town. The church displays many cast iron features in its construction. The door and window frames, internal pillars, covers of tombs in the grave yard and the font itself are all made of cast iron.
The church today still serves a very strong congregation and continues to be a focus of the community.
The church has a busy calendar which in 2005 focuses on the 200th Anniversary of the consecration of St Peters. Throughout the year there are various events planned to celebrate the anniversary. A special visitor to the town came in March when the Most Reverend Dr Rowan William, Archbishop of Canterbury who was previously the Bishop of Monmouth Diocesan, lead a procession through the streets of Blaenavon before giving a service in St Peters to celebrate Palm Sunday.
There are many other chapels and churches situated in the town of Blaenavon, all of which played a central role in community life and have helped to shape the history of the town.
